Motor Information

Axial Airgap Motors

The axial airgap motor concept is different from a conventional totally enclosed motor in that it has a very short length but is larger in diameter. It is an ideal solution for equipment manufacturers (OEM's) requiring compact motors in large batches. It is available in outputs from 100W up to 2.2kW in frame sizes AAG115, AAG145 and AAG181. The construction is equally suited to single phase, multi-speed or induction generator designs aswell as the standard 3 phase design.

The principal advantage of the axial airgap motor lies in its configuration where the overall length provides OEM's with competitive advantages for their own products, for example fans where the overall depth of the fan can be significantly reduced. Other applications include floor polishers, hoists, pumps and compressors. Application requirements such as torque, noise or optimisation of efficiencies can be accommodated.

The optimisation of the motor design and the exploitation of opportunities for integration, such as shared bearing arrangements and customised enclosures, benefits from involvement early in the equipment product development cycle and joint development programmes.

Drip Proof Motors

The Drip proof motor range has been designed to optimise the customer benefits of a high power to weight ratio and covers products with outputs from 30kW to 265kW in frame sizes K-CF225M to K-CF315M, in either 2,4,6 or 8 pole speeds.

The Drip proof range of motors are an ideal option where weight, size or cost per kW output are important. They are suitable for relatively clean environments and locations where a degree of protection is already afforded to the motor, eg. pump houses. Typical applications are compressors, fire pumps and marine duties, etc.

All motors have an IP23 enclosure as standard. This means that motors are protected against the harmful ingress of solid and foreign objects and against the harmful ingress of water (spray) falling at 60 deg to the vertical shaft mounting.

The Drip proof range utilises cast iron integral foot frames, endshields and terminal boxes, with asteel fan cover. All drive endshields are pre-machined to take a flange adaptor without further modification.
Features include:
• IP23 enclosure
• Top mounted terminal box - RHS and LHS options available
• Compressor speed torque curve

Designed specifically as fan drives for both normal ventilation and heat and smoke removal duty, Brook Crompton Fumex motors are capable of providing extended operation in high ambient temperatures - allowing smoke and heat extraction systems to continue operating effectively during an emergency situation. Fumex motors are suitable for installation on most types of extraction fan, including both axial flow and bifurcated systems, and are installed in enclosed areas such as high rise buildings, tunnels and shopping malls worldwide.

Permanent Magnet Motors

The MP range covers outputs from 0.25kW to 1.5kW, IP22, IP44 or IP55 IC01/IC410. The permanent magnet motor can be used in variable sped drive applications as a replacement for the separately-excited shunt motor with the advantage that there is no need for a field supply, and the field excitation wiring between controller and motor and motor is eliminated. Permanent magnet motors have a smaller diameter body than the equivalent wound field motor. However, permanent magnet motors do not have the facility of field trimming

Marine Motors

Marine duty motors are designed and rated for use on board merchant ships built anywhere in the world and in accordance with the requirements of the major marine clsssification authorities. These requirements generally concern limits to winding temperature rises with given ambient temperatures, which determine the motor frame size for a given output. For certain larger motors some authorities specify normalised shaft steel to give greater consistency. The requirements for witnessed tests, type tests, certification etc. differ between authorities and all can be accommodated. However these exceptional demands must be made clear at the time of ordering.

Brook Crompton Marine motors can be offered in either aluminium or cast iron material, the choice be determined by factors such as weight, appearance, efficiency, applications etc. The paint finish and winding protection are chosen to suit the harsh marine environments in which the motors have to perform.

Monsoon Motors

Monsoon tropical treatment was developed by Brook Crompton to protect motors from corrosion when operating in hostile environments including tropical climates and industries such as petrochemical, paper, glass-making and textiles where they are subjected to frequent deluge and heat/thermal cycling. These conditions cause condensation to form on the internal surfaces of the motor and the resulting corrosion can cause irreparable damage to stator windings and moving parts on unprotected motors.
A large number of Brook Crompton Monsoon Tropical Treatment motors are currently operating in extreme climatic conditions in the a number of Middle and Far Eastern countries, providing a cost-effective solution to drive applications in a wide range of chemical and process industries. Monsoon Tropical Treatment is offered on all cast iron motors including hazardous atmosphere BASEEFA certified motors - EEx d/de, EEx e, EEx nA.

Available in outputs from 0.09kW to 2.2kW, frame sizes PDA63S to 2-PDA90L, in 2 and 4 pole speeds.
High Torque Design: As above but with a higher starting torque of between 70% and 80% of full load dependent on frame size. Available in outputs from 0.37kW to 1.1kW, frame sizes 2-PDA80M and 2-PDA90L, in 4 pole speed.
Variable Voltage Speed Control Design: For use on variable voltage (thyristor) speed control such as fan applications. Available in outputs from 0.37kW to 1.1kW, frame sizes 2-PDA80M and 2-PDA90L, in 2 and 4 pole speeds.

Plug-in Motors

The plug-in motor provides a simply, quick and effective electrical connection method to install, replace, maintain or clean equipment with rapid re-connection. The plug-in motor range is available in aluminium construction and covers outputs from as litle as 0.07kW up to 22kW in either 2, 4, 6 and 8 pole speeds in frame sizes W-DA63S to W-DA180M.
Plug and socket systems are widely used throughout process industries, such as car plants, food or pharmaceutical industries, where multi-skilled staff are able to install or replace equipment or motors with as little time delay as possible. Removal of equipment may be for routine cleaning or maintenance. Other types of industry may benefit from this method of connection where the rapid removal or replacement of a motor is essential, due to the nature of the operating environment.
Brook Crompton has developed a simple and effective plug and socket system in conjunction with a leading manufacturer of connectors. Motor connection is via a male housing (plug) attached to the motor frame which is connected to its mains supply via a matching hood (female socket). Housings, hoods and inserts can be supplied in a kit form to enable the modification of existing motors, details available from Brook Crompton.

W EEx e Increased Saftey Motors

Shunt Wound Motors

The MD range covers outputs from 0.09kW to 15kW, IP20-IP55, IC01, IC410, IC06. The MKIII range covers outputs from 10kW to 750kW, IP23-IP55, IC06, IC0666, ICW37, A86, IC0040.Shunt motors with separately-excited fields are the popular choice where speed control is required over a wide range. If the field current is held constant and the armature voltage reduced then an infinite speed range can be obtained down to zero speed with constant torque capability. If the armature voltage is held constant and the field current is reduced, then speed increases over a limited range of 2:1 or 3:1 can be achieved with constant power output capability, commutation and stability being the limiting factors.

Field trimming can be applied in order to equally match two or more similar motors being fed in parellel from the same armature supply source.

High Pressure Washer (HPW) – TDA

Direct-on-line starting only with starting characteristics to suit operation from single phase socket outlets even when delivering 2.2kW. Motors are specifically designed to start under the worst possible conditions, i.e. against full back pressure, a condition which should not occur but often does. Available in outputs from 0.75kW to 3kW, frame size 2-TDA100L, in 2 and 4 pole speeds. HPW motors are available with a standard shaft extension or with a female hollow shaft, having one bearing at the non-drive end. 110V versions are also available.
